Mr. Fee joined the Idaho Shakespeare Festival (ISF) as artistic director in December 1991. In July of 2002, he was named producing artistic director of the Great Lakes Theater Festival (GLTF) in Cleveland, Ohio, a position he continues to hold under a joint agreement with Idaho Shakespeare Festival. For the five years prior to joining ISF, Charlie held the position of artistic director at the Sierra Repertory Theatre in northern California. He has worked with such companies as the Old Globe Theatre, La Jolla Playhouse, the Milwaukee and Missouri Repertory Theaters, Actor's Theatre of Phoenix, and the Los Angeles Shakespeare Festival.
During his tenure with ISF, the company has experienced explosive growth with last summer's attendance at an all time high. His work with statewide educational programming has created the largest educational outreach program in Idaho, reaching schools in nearly every county, and playing to over 50,000 students from K through 12th grades. In addition,
Matinees at the Festival hosts nearly 4,000 middle and high school students at the amphitheater each fall for a fully staged production. Charlie led the effort in 1996, to merge Idaho Theater for Youth with ISF, assuming all programming of the youth oriented company and greatly enhancing ISF's commitment to education through touring and
The Drama School. ISF has garnered significant awards under Mr. Fee's artistic leadership: the 1995 Mayor's Award for Excellence in the Arts; the 1996 FUNDSY award; the 2000 Governor's Award for Excellence in the Arts. In 2001, Charles was honored for his work as a director with the Mayor's Award for Excellence in the Arts.
In addition to his work with ISF and GLTF, Charlie is a member of the theater arts faculty at Boise State University, and is active within the community where he served as a member of the strategic planning committee for the Morrison Center, as producer of the FUNDSY Award Gala ('96, '98 and 2000), and as producer of the 1996 Governor's Awards in the Arts. Charles has served on the board of the Boise Metro Chamber of Commerce and as a member of the Downtown Rotary Club. He received his Bachelors degree from the University of the Pacific, and a Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of California, San Diego. Charlie lives in Boise with his wife Lidia and 8 year old daughter, Alexa.
